A 5 cm (2 in) cowrie, shaped in solid bronze and hollowed out to stay light. Sitting flat on the lobe, it fills the whole ear without ever feeling heavy. The serrated central slit and the domed back follow the shell line for line.

The essentials

  • Bronze cowrie, 5 cm high by 3.5 cm at its widest (2 × 1.4 in)
  • Hollow piece: all of the volume, none of the weight
  • Stud fitting, with post and butterfly back, also in bronze
  • Shaped by hand by Alassane, a jeweler in Rufisque
  • Unisex jewelry
The cowrie, first a currency, then a sign

The cowrie circulated as currency across much of West Africa, long before colonial currencies. It is also found in divination, in ceremonial adornment and in protection rites. Wearing it today carries this memory forward: the jewel speaks of belonging as much as it adorns.

We have devoted an in-depth article to its history: The cowrie in Africa, from ancient currency to symbolic jewel. On the social function of jewelry in general, see The social role of jewelry in Africa.

Bronze and Alassane's hand

Bronze is cast and then finished by hand: this finishing gives the curve of the back and the line of the slit. Alassane, a jeweler in Rufisque, shapes each pair in his workshop. No piece is ever exactly identical to another.

How to wear them

A piece this size calls for an uncovered ear: hair up, neck free, a high collar or a clean neckline. On a simple outfit, it is enough on its own, without a necklace.

Bronze naturally goes with handwoven cloth: it echoes the golds of Manjak as well as the earth tones of bogolan. Browse our African clothing and our African dresses to put the outfit together.

To stay with the same metal, the Aldiana collection brings together our African earrings in gold-tone bronze.

Care

Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing. Store away from moisture. To revive the shine of the bronze, a little metal polish on the cloth is enough, never directly on the piece.

Frequently asked questions

Are they heavy to wear?
No. The piece is hollow: it has the volume of a large jewel without the weight, and the butterfly back holds it flat against the lobe.

Is the bronze solid?
Yes, it is solid bronze, not plating. Its color is that of the metal itself.

Is it jewelry for women?
Our jewelry is unisex. This piece takes on whatever style you give it.

Where does the piece come from?
From Senegal, from Alassane's workshop in Rufisque. It is shipped from Paris.

Can I give them as a gift?
Yes, for a man as well as a woman: the piece is unisex and there is no size to guess. The cowrie, once a currency in West Africa, carries an idea of prosperity and protection: a meaningful gift for a birthday, Christmas, Mother's or Father's Day.
