Manjak Cloth

Manjak cloth is the cloth of the Manjak, a weaving people settled between Casamance and Guinea-Bissau, some of whom now weave in Dakar. It is woven by hand in narrow bands, on a loom where each motif is built thread by thread from dyed cotton yarn.

It is the cloth of our childhood in Senegal: we did not discover it while traveling, we grew up with it. Our scarves, stoles, jackets, coats and home pieces come off the looms of our Manjak weavers Patrao, Jean and Fernando.

New: our reversible unisex long vest comes in Manjak cloth, in three colorways: black and gold, navy and gray, royal blue and cream.

Real handwoven cloth, never a print

At Kaolack Créations, as at our shop Kama The Shop, we work with neither wax nor prints: all our cloth is woven by hand, then made up in Africa. Wax is cotton printed in a factory, most often outside Africa, where the pattern is laid on the surface of the fabric. On Manjak cloth, the pattern is part of the weaving itself: it never fades, and each piece keeps the trace of the weaver's hand.
