The Baoulé fabric: textile heritage of the Akan communities of Côte d'Ivoire

The Baoulé fabric used for this shirt comes from the traditional weaving workshops of the Akan communities in Côte d'Ivoire. Woven on a strip loom by artisans who perpetuate ancestral know-how, this textile shares a common origin with the Kente Ashanti and the Kente Ewe of Ghana: both textile traditions come from the Akan culture which extends from Côte d'Ivoire to Ghana.

The geometric patterns of the Baoulé fabric have cultural meanings in Akan culture. The woven bands in off-white, orange, pink, and yellow create compositions that are part of a visual language transmitted since always.
